I heard, and X-filex confirmed, that chupacabra is really a mutation/transformation caused by exposure to an extraterrestrial pathogen, or microbe. Perhaps these "mange mites" burrow much more deeply than beneath the skin. Maybe, like the Ceti Eels (ST2:TWOK) they burrow into the brain, and the host organism is then powerless, and spends the remainder of its miserable existence scavenging for roadkill and taking down small farm animals.
