To everyone that believes that bullying couldn't possibly be bad enough to cause a teenager to kill himself or herself and that there just has to be some underlying cause:
You have no fucking idea, so shut your damn fool mouth.
Are kids that kill themselves because of bullying depressed? Yes. That's because bullying causes depression.
Are they socially maladjusted? Quite likely. Bullied kids don't get a chance to adjust socially.
Do they have other life stuff going on? What teenager doesn't?
What makes it worse is the relentless pounding, physically, emotionally, and mentally, that they take on a daily basis. If you've never been bullied, you probably have some idea about fourth graders knocking each other down in the school yard.
That is not how it is.
This is how it is.
There is nothing about you that is right, no matter how hard you try.
Everything you say is twisted against you, and everything you do or don't do is an opportunity for abuse.
People will pretend to be your friend for a day or a week, and you will be so desperate for companionship that you will confide all your secrets to them, only to find them rapidly circulating the school as soon as your "friend" decides she's gotten enough juicy info.
If you're poor, it's possible your tormenters will hide something of theirs in your desk and then accuse you of stealing it. There is no defense to this that you can make. You will not be believed.
If you're not athletic, gym class is a sanctioned opportunity for physical abuse.
If you're a girl, you have your tits grabbed daily. You might be alternately taunted as a virgin , a dyke and a slut, because you won't date (i.e. fuck) the boys that torment you.
You will be physically assaulted, possibly multiple times. This will happen in school and out of it, because teachers aren't paid enough to care.
You will receive no quarter from appeals to adult authority. If by some miracle you learn to stand your own against two attackers, or three, or more, it will be presumed that you, not they, are the bully. This goes triple if you're from the wrong side of the tracks and they are comfortably middle class.
Will you be depressed? Oh, my, yes you will. But more importantly, you will be living every single day in desperate fear of what you're going to suffer that day. And believe me, you will be suffering it. And you will be dreaming of escape, any way you can.
How do I know that?
Because that was my life, from fourth grade to ninth. And it only stopped when I moved to an urban school large enough to be completely inconsequential. And I still suffer from it. And you know? I didn't even have it that bad. I didn't actually have anything odd about me, other than being an early bloomer with a poor family and a certain independence of mind. The religious girl who didn't celebrate holidays? The girl whose hair was never combed? The boy that "looked like a fag"? Oh, they had it much, much worse.
So if you're really inclined to say "there must be something else going on?" No. No, there does not have to be something else going on. Being emotionally, physically, and sexually assaulted for days, months or years on end is plenty enough, thanks. And if you still think that? Fuck you, and GTFO my friends page. Thank you very much.
