Really a fun movie! I'm not a fan of Tim Allen, I watched too much Home Improvement as a child and realized as I got older how terrible it was (I hope Patricia Richardson is rich as fuck from syndication, because Jill was the definition of a thankless role) but I remember that movie being basically kind-hearted and light-spirited.
That is pretty much the case; it actually does manage to be funny and heartwarming and all that junk, so I just ignore the fact that Tim Allen (who I am also not a fan of) is in it. After all, David Krumholz is in it too, and that almost balances it out.
