The ideology of personal responsibility leads many to blame the current crisis on subprime homeowners. How, they ask, could anyone be stupid enough to take such deals in the first place? However, as a Congressional inquiry reminds us, it was not the stupidity of borrowers that led to this mess, but rather the willingness to lend unsuitable amounts of money at unsuitable rates and the promiscuous repackaging and sharing of debt among them that was at fault.

It's so quiet in the library this time of year, before everyone decides they better study. My stats class seems to be much improved, the lecturer for this class (Donna Spraggon, who I think someone recommended to me as "awesome" last time) is much more understandable than the last lecturer. I also did the sensible thing and put away my laptop to take notes properly, even though I knew everything in this lecture already. Hopefully, having written it down once, I won't forget it next time. Ugh.

Time to eat breakfast and chill now.

I know that we're supposed to consider the 1950s and 1960s in Soviet Russia a time of terrible, grim, dreariness and sameness, but honestly: compare Soviet grocery advertisements with American food advertisements of the same era. They don't look any more unappetizing to me, and as [profile] _nicolai_ points out, the art is of better quality.

There are no grocery stores in Detroit. How do 800,000 people keep from starving to death? Truly, it is a mystery.
